IRTEC ACCREDITATION

The IRTEC Accreditation Scheme

IRTEC is a renewable and voluntary accreditation scheme that assesses the safety and competence of technicians who maintain, repair and inspect vehicles in the commercial, trailer and passenger carrying sector. The IRTEC accreditation is valid for 5 years and assesses both the knowledge and the practical level of an individual. Technicians who take IRTEC assessments are tested on their theoretical and practical skills and, if successful, will be awarded an IRTEC accreditation.

To be eligible for the IRTEC accreditation, technicians must have either; a minimum of 3 years’ industry experience or a level 3 qualification and 12 months industry experience.

The Inspection Technician accreditation consists of 1 practical module (Inspection of vehicles), and 1 online underpinning knowledge test. To complete this level, candidates must be competent at inspecting a vehicle and identifying defects. This is the most commonly taken level as it examines the technician’s knowledge against the DVSA HGV/PSV Inspection manuals.
